Cotton farmers in Chilakaluripet, who have waged a battle against a branded hybrid seed company, finally have a reason to smile after the High Court ordered the Kaveri Seeds to pay a compensation of Rs. 66.47 lakh to them.
Joint Director of Agriculture V.D.V. Krupa Das has said the company started crediting the amount to the account of the JD and it would be transferred to the accounts of the affected farmers.
The issue surfaced in 2016 when, on a complaint by the cotton farmers, the then Minister of Agriculture P. Pulla Rao asked the department and the RAAS scientists of to conduct an inquiry and submit a report. Based on the findings, Mr. Krupa Das recommended that the firm pay Rs. 10,000 per acre. The company challenged it in the HC which finally ruled that it had to pay compensation.
