GMR Infrastructure said the agreement was under India's Regional Connectivity – UDAN Scheme.

BENGALURU : GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Infrastructure Limited, on Monday said that it has signed the concession agreement to commission, operationalize and maintain the civilian enclave at Bidar airport, in North Karnataka.

GMR Infrastructure informed the stock exchange that the agreement was under India's Regional Connectivity – UDAN (Hindi acronym for Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) Scheme--that aims to provide air connectivity to underserved parts of the country through a demand driven scheme, subsidized by the central and state governments.

"We are very pleased to partner with the

Government of Karnataka to support efforts for all-round development Bidar and nearby regions and we are confident that the start of commercial operations at Bidar will provide a boost to the local economy through better connectivity for the people of Bidar and the large number of tourists who visit the area," SGK Kishore, Executive Director – South, GMR Airports and CEO-GHIAL, said in a statement.

GHIAL is expected to start airport operations in the first week of February with one daily route to Bengaluru.

The developments in Bidar comes two months after the Karnataka government inaugurated the Kalaburagi airport in the same region in the hope that investments and industries would follow and help develop one of the most backward regions of the country.

The Karnataka government is trying hard to sell the idea of getting corporations to set up shop in parts other than Benagaluru to help develop other parts of the state.

Air connectivity, the government hopes, will help its efforts to attract interest ahead of the Global Investors Meet (GIM), scheduled to be held in November.

Karnataka, that is coming out with a new industrial policy, is also holding an investors meet in Hubballi later this month as a prelude to the GIM in November.
