Dr. Shankar Nath Acharya, Ph.D., B.A. (Hons.) served as the Chief Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Finance, India. Dr. Acharya served as with World Bank from 1971 to 1982 and served in several senior positions including Director of World Development Report and Research Adviser from 1979 to 1982. He served as Economic Advisor to the Union Finance Ministry from 1985 to 1990. From 1993 to 2000, he served as Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India and was deeply involved in the economic reforms of that period. He has been the Non-Executive Chairman of Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited (formerly, Kotak Mahindra Finance Limited) since July 20, 2012 and serves as its Independent Non-Executive Director. He serves as a Member of Program Planning Advisory Group - Economics / Development and Member of Advisory Council at India International Centre. Dr. Acharya has decades of experience in various fields of economics and finance. He has been Independent Director at The Great Eastern Shipping Company Limited since February 05, 2015. Dr. Acharya served as an Additional Director of Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited since May 20, 2003. He served as a Member at SEBI from 1997 to 2000.

 

He served as a Non-Executive and Independent Director of Eros International Media Limited from November 1, 2009 to April 30, 2015. He serves on the governing bodies of several national research organizations. He is a Board Member of ICRIER, National Council of Applied & Economic Research and the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy. He was a Member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council from 2001 to 2003 and Member, Twelfth Finance Commission since 2004. He is Reserve Bank's Professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER). Dr. Acharya is one of India's leading policy Economic Adviser to the Government of India. He has also authored several books and numerous scholarly articles in academic journals. Dr. Acharya holds a Bachelors' degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University in 1967 and a Doctorate in Economics from Harvard University in 1972.
